Inspired by Alain Resnais' 1956 documentary film "Night and Fog" about the Holocaust. I viewed it during rehearsals for the high school production of “Cabaret” I was involved with freshman year and I wrote the song that night after rehearsal. I don't quite remember what the Hitler sample translated to, but it was Adam's idea to throw it in the bridge and I thought it was a fitting touch. I still consider this my magnum opus.

Lyrics

Night and fog fall upon me, covering all I see.
False illusions and confusions disillusion me.
I hear the songbirds doing nothing except for singing the song they've sung so long.
The morning came and no one cared that the music was all gone.

There are no words that I can say.
There is no music I can play.
Is there a way to make it real, this feeling you should never feel?
i hope you're happier than me.

A world combusting, people rusting, city loses shine.
A single stranger, sensing danger, draws the thinning line.
"I see you people doing nothing except for standing, ignoring idly by and by.
I'm just a stranger but in this strange land, I hear you neighbors die!"

There are no words that I can say.
There is no music I can play.
Is there a way that I can show, this feeling you should never know?
I hope you're happier than me.

Listen to those sounds ahead from beyond the gated walls that you pass every day in living.
You'll hear the sounds of the birds numbering in the thousands, locked up in cages that aren't forgiving.
Watch as they tremble in fear, under shadows black as night as they search for a light that's dimming.
Pray every day, wish and hope that the worst is over, though history shows it's just beginning.

God judges all from the blood that they spill upon the Earth in his name, do you think they know his will?
Night and fog, life and death, scales of justice weigh the purity of man against the innocence they kill.

What would you do? Would you stand and fight?
Or would you leave them all behind?
What would you do? Would you stand and fight?
Or would you leave them all to die?
